पिछले हफ्ते इंटरनेट की दुनिया में एक अनोखी घटना घटी। एक पॉप्युलर सोशल नेटवर्किंग साइट पर एक फोटो पोस्ट की गई। यह फोटो अमेरिका में रहने वाली एक सिख लड़की की थी, जिसके चेहरे पर दाढ़ी-मूंछ दिख रही थी। यह फोटो उस साइट के फनी सेक्शन में पोस्ट की गई थी। सोशल मीडिया साइट्स के लिए किसी व्यक्ति या समुदाय के प्रति संवेदनहीनता दिखाना कोई नई बात नहीं है। खास कर तब, जब वह व्यक्ति या समुदाय किसी मामले में बाकियों से हट कर हो। लेकिन इस घटना को असामान्य बनाया उस लड़की की प्रतिक्रिया ने, जिसकी फोटो उस साइट पर पोस्ट की गई थी। इस लड़की का नाम है बलप्रीत कौर।
शरीर से ऊपर
बलप्रीत ने न आंसू बहाए और न आगबबूला हुई। न उसने फोटो पोस्ट करने वाले की आलोचना की, न कोई जवाबी हमला किया। इन सबसे अलग उसने गरिमापूर्ण ढंग से अपना कॉमेंट पोस्ट किया। उसमें अपने चेहरे को लेकर कहीं कोई शर्मिंदगी नहीं थी। उसने लिखा, 'हमारा धर्म हमें अपने शरीर को पवित्र मानने की शिक्षा देता है, चाहे वह हमें जिस रूप में भी मिला हो।' उसने लिखा कि 'शरीर से ऊपर उठना हमारे लिए ज्यादा महत्वपूर्ण है। इस सुंदरता से बढ़कर है विचारों और कर्म की सुंदरता, जिसकी छाप लंबे समय तक बनी रहती है।' बलप्रीत ने उस पोस्ट पर आए नेगेटिव और पॉजिटिव, हर तरह के कॉमेंट्स की सराहना की। अपने पोस्ट के आखिर में उसने लिखा कि इस तरह का कंन्फ्यूजन पैदा करने के लिए उसे माफ किया जाए। उसकी किसी बात से लोगों को दुख पहुंचा हो तो इसके लिए वह क्षमाप्रार्थी है।
हार की जीत

बलप्रीत की सहनशीलता का नतीजा बहुत सुखद रहा। साइट पर फोटो पोस्ट करने वाले को अपनी गलती का अहसास हुआ। उसने बलप्रीत से माफी मांगी और स्वीकार किया कि उसका बर्ताव बेहद अशिष्ट और ऐंठ वाला था। आप चाहें तो बलप्रीत और उस व्यक्ति के कमेंट्स को रेडिट पर पढ़ सकते हैं। आज के दौर में भावुकता बहुत बढ़ गई है। हम हर घटना को अपने ऊपर हमले की तरह लेते हैं। इससे आपसी कड़वाहट और नफरत बढ़ती जाती है। किसी ने आलोचना की तो हम या तो उसका स्पष्टीकरण देने लगते हैं या जवाबी आलोचना में जुट जाते हैं। बलप्रीत ने ऐसा नहीं किया। गुस्सा नहीं दिखाया। अपशब्द नहीं कहे। उसने संयम बरता और एक अप्रिय स्थिति को प्रिय बना दिया। अपनी स्थिति को स्पष्ट किया और सब कुछ सामान्य हो गया। इसमें कोई पराजित नहीं हुआ, किसी की हेठी नहीं हुई। बलप्रीत अपनी सहनशीलता से विजयी हुई। गलती करने वाला अपनी गलती का अहसास करके विजेता बन गया।
बलप्रीत ने अपने व्यवहार में जो बड़प्पन, जो शालीनता दिखाई, वह अद्भुत है। सच तो यह है कि शालीनता में बहुत ताकत होती है। इस ताकत का ही असर था कि बलप्रीत ने सभी का दिल जीत लिया। उसका मजाक उड़ाने वाला खुद ही मजाक का पात्र बन गया। हालांकि कोई अपनी गलती की माफी मांगे, यह भी कोई कम बड़ी बात नहीं है। खासकर आज के दौर में। क्षमा मांगना आजकल एक खोखली प्रतिक्रिया बनकर रह गया है। इसमें दिखावा ज्यादा है, गलती का अहसास बिल्कुल नहीं। अक्सर लोग माफी सिर्फ इसलिए मांगते हैं क्योंकि उन्हें इसमें कोई न कोई फायदा नजर आता है। सार्वजनिक मंच पर कोई बयान दे दिया। लोगों ने आलोचना की तो कह दिया, मैं तो कुछ और ही कहना चाहता था / चाहती थी। मेरी बात को संदर्भ से काटकर पेश किया गया। मैंने कोई गलती तो नहीं की है, फिर भी लोगों से माफी मांगता / मांगती हूं क्योंकि उन्हें ठेस पहुंची है।
कई लोग मानते हैं कि उदारता से अपनी आलोचना सुनना और इसके बाद आलोचक को माफ कर देना कमजोरी की निशानी है। माना जाता है कि अगर हम आलोचनाओं का तत्काल और तीखा जवाब न दें तो हमारा आत्मसम्मान बिखरकर रह जाएगा। धार्मिक और जातिगत पहचान से जुड़े मसलों पर प्रतिक्रिया जताने में लोग अपना सब कुछ झोंक देते हैं। इसका परिणाम हिंसा के रूप में नजर आता है। लोग एक-दूसरे को नुकसान पहुंचाते हैं, बिना यह सोचे कि इसमें उनका ही नुकसान है। बलप्रीत कौर ने ऐसा न करके परिपक्वता दिखाई। वह अपनी पहचान को लेकर संवेदनशील और भावुक नहीं हुई। हाल के दिनों में लोगों ने इसका ठीक उलटा किया है। किसी ने उत्तेजित किया तो अपना आपा खो दिया। शायद उनके पास दूसरा विकल्प न हो। लेकिन बलप्रीत वाली घटना से पता चलता है कि हमारे पास दूसरा विकल्प हमेशा मौजूद होता है, और यह हमें पहले से ज्यादा मजबूत बनाता है। इसने हमें सिखाया है कि अगर हम अपनी आलोचनाओं को खुले दिल से स्वीकारेंगे तो आलोचना करने वाले को अपना विचार बदलने पर मजबूर होना पड़ेगा। कई सौ साल पहले जब कबीरदास ने कहा था, निंदक नियरे राखिए, आंगन कुटी छवाय, तो उनका मतलब यही था।
गांधी का रास्ता
कट्टरपंथियों को अपनी बात लोगों तक पहुंचाने और मनवाने के लिए तरह-तरह के हथकंडे अपनाने पड़ते हैं। बलप्रीत को इसके लिए कुछ नहीं करना पड़ा। क्रोध के मद को तोड़कर एक नई शुरुआत की जाए तो कितना अच्छा हो। हमारा पक्ष यह है, और यह दूसरे का पक्ष है। अगर हम दूसरे को भी जायज तरीके से अपना पक्ष रखने दें तो इसमें क्या बुराई है। गलती किसी से भी हो सकती है, लेकिन हम गलती करने वाले पर भी भरोसा करेंगे। हर स्थिति में गरिमा और उदारता का प्रदर्शन बहुत ही खूबसूरत प्रतिक्रिया है। इसमें बहुत ताकत होती है और इसे हथियार के तौर पर इस्तेमाल किया जा सकता है। गांधी जी ने यही किया था। उनके बताए रास्ते पर चलकर आज भी हम अपना जीवन सुंदर बना सकते हैं।
