Re: [CROMA] Galleria Markets Condition

There is always a foul smell in Galleria. And the main reason for it is the restaurants/street food providers. Needs heavy penalization.

Dear CIPL,
This is to bring to your notice that both Galleria Markets are in very bad condition in terms of hygiene and cleanliness. The condition is worsening day by day. Both the markets have stinking and overflown drains & garbage bins and are very ideal place for harmful bacteria and mosquitos to breed.
On November 09, 2014 (previous Sunday) some of the residents gathered at Galleria Market and discussed the issue with shop owners and housekeeping staff.
We also shown improper cleaning to housekeeping staff and requested them to clean it in front of us. Please find the attached pictures of both markets that show pathetic hygiene and maintenance conditions of the markets. You can also download pictures in higher resolution from following internet location:

During our discussion with shop owners we learned that housekeeping staff are not doing their work properly and instead they remain busy in collecting waste and scrap which they can sale to make money. They also do not use proper cleaning methods, place plastics in garbage bins, use soap and Phenyl, empty garbage bins as frequently as required.
Some things which need immediate attention are as following:
  1. Lot of shop owners have encroached gallery space in front of their shops hence blocking way for pedestrians. Some other shopkeepers have occupied entire gallery space making it impossible for residents to pass through.
  2. One shop adjacent to the lift has encroached lot of space right in front of lift.  The shop owner gave reason that the lift doesn't work. The encroachment should be removed to make way for lift.
  3. Some shop owners have sublet space to food vendors. The food vendors operate open kitchen without any regard for hygiene and safety. Space outside should be allowed only for display not for putting food stalls which are major contributor for littering and dirt. All these kitchens run with temporary make-shift arrangement without exhaust and are creating lot of problems. Immediate action should be taken for removal of illegal stalls and encroachment.
  4. Garbage bins placed near food-stalls are very small and seem more like formalities. They get overflowed very soon. There should be bigger and close-lid bins with a plastic to gather waste. Please place more number of bins in and around the markets.
  5. Drains should be regularly cleaned to avoid water logging and stink. Phenyl or other bacteria killing liquids should be used for cleaning.
  6. The gallery floor should be cleaned with soap and water at least once a week to insure tiles are in shape.
  7. Several floor tiles are broken and missing hence causing inconvenience. Please have them repaired/replaced.
  8. The washrooms/toilets are in bad shape and as a result some shop owners urinate in open. We identified one place in market where a shop-owner urinates in gallery. Such activities should be stopped.
  9. Please provide proper cleaning equipment and supplies to housekeeping staff and maintain a log of cleaning activity.
We request some senior CIPL officials to conduct joint inspection of both markets along with CROMA, residents and shop-owners and take appropriate action to improve the situation.
Regards,
Concerned Residents
